Hello Glenn,

You asked me yesterday evening the best way to adjust an HF transmitter
for PSK-31 operation, and I am not sure I gave you a complete answer.

Here is the method I follow:
with an _average_ (not PEP) reading power meter or SWR bridge in the RF
path (best if first performed in a dummy load) :

a) select "tune" in your digital mode software (I prefer WinPSK) and
adjust your Microphone gain (or drive or whatever) to read, say, 20
watts.

b) now switch your software to BPSK and just transmit the idle tone,
leaving all controls set as in (a) above. What power reading are you
now getting on the external meter? Is it less that 1/2 above (i.e., 10
watts in our case?)

It should be less that 1/2 the output while in the tune mode. If it is
not, you are overdriving your rig's audio input, and you need to either
reduce the soundcard output, or add some attenuation.

Hope this helps
