Because maybe he wants to build an Audion to see how an original 
Armstrong regenerative receiver would sound like.  DeForest had some 
nutty ideas about what made tubes work, so his creations weren't pulled 
down to a hard vacuum.  Pulling a semi-hard vacuum on a tube that is 
known to function properly otherwise seems like a pretty good prototype.
