I think the products that Peter is describing having issues with are 
already among us and very much entrenched. What he is describing is 
HomePlug and over 16 million nodes shipped in the last 12 months alone.
They are used solely for local network connectivity using the power 
wiring in your house. Much like X-10 power control but at a much higher 
frequency. As much as 14 megabits/s data rates
The IEEE standard for this is well on its way to confirmation (P1901 
working group) and it has already been integrated into TIA-1113.
You can buy the stuff at Circuit City, Best Buy etc. This is completely 
distinct from the delivery of broadband services over power utility 
infrastructure (BPOL) This train has not only left the station but has 
made several round trips and gone through an engine or two.
