It's common knowledge in the wind biz that gearboxes are the Achilles Heel of turbines. That is why there's a huge push for direct-drive turbines. GE Wind's new 4 megawatt turbine designed specifically for offshore use is direct drive. Generators are rare earth permanent magnet units with rectifier inverters to make grid sync 60 Hz.
