GPS is a fabulous tool!  I've recently added some 24k resolution topo maps for Utah hiking trails.  What a difference over carrying a paper map and compass.

However, I think our government and society as a whole is foolish to abandon nearly all forms of terrestrial communication and navigation.  Satellites are not immune from destruction, and if the government had the mind to, things could be turned off or functionality greatly reduced.
