You're right about the RIM tablet, Terry. I have learned that RIM built the Blackberry tablet on top of QNX which is not a bad embedded unix-*ish* OS. I actually think they might be able to secure it better than some of the other alternatives, but it is about as boutique-y as you can get as OSes go. There's a fair possibility if you have some old consumer/SOHO-grade non-Linux routers you might have one running QNX (or more likely vxWorks). 

I think QNX had real-time extensions at one point or another, but I don't know that there's much of an aftermarket tweaking community for it. That may change with the new tablet's release, but I'm not sure what the hurdle will be for becoming a developer. 

When I fooled with QNX years ago it was a solid embedded OS and not as alien as vxWorks, but it took an old-school embedded programmer's mind to really make it sing.
