> Well, isn't that just peachy! In the fifties we were warned of...
> nuclear testing fallout in our food...

And so we STOPPED above ground testing!

> and fast dwindling oil reserves.

Which are going fast. We are PAST peak oil and our kids will see the end of big oil in their lifetimes!

> Off course the threat of nuclear annihilation was...
> in the background but folks mostly managed to ignore that.

The ignorant ignore everything that does not affect their hand-to-mouth existence...

> Then came ozone depletion and the prediction that we
> were all going to die of starvation from ultraviolet...

And we STOPPED using Flourocarbons from every paint can, hiar spray and A/C unit on the planet. And we FIXED the ozon hole! And we did it in only 3 decades!

> Meanwhile, skin cancer would eat us alive.

It is, the rate of skin cancer to is higher than it has ever been...

> As those warnings started to fade...

Due to due diligence by people educated enough to realize the importance of cleaning up the mess we are making...

> our collective latent paranoia was once again reinforced

> governed by ruthless politicians.

Now that IS the truth. Ignorance prevails...

> Now that these dire predictions have been unmasked as fiction..

None of them were fiction. They were TRUE problems and thank heavens for those that took the warning and DID something about them...

> we're faced yet again with an unproven yet 'almost certain'
> calamity by cosmic forces beyond our control.

We can't do anything about the sun. But it will take millions of years for that to cause problems. Meanwhile we will mostly have killed each other over the price of oil and food resources as there becomes a re-distribution of energy and crops as the climate changes...

> What is a poor human to do? Threats abound everywhere!

Take action on the ones we CAN control. And reducing our carbon footprint is something we CAN do.

> As Alfred E. Neuman said, "What - Me worry?

If he is your idol, then that is the problem...
