These days, win7 is a much better alternative than extra-pain

Ignore the fact that vista ever existed and install win7 if
you care remotely about hardening you system. I'm not
Suggesting it's perfect, but it is lots, lots better.
And I have yet to see a windows app that won't run on win7 
that doesn't have (possibly silent) pathologies on XP.

I'm not shilling for MS - just trying to make the Internet a bit
Less wretched than it might be otherwise.
