This is fascinating stuff - very interesting phenomenon.

Also check this pdf out - it "sheds a bit of light" on the subject of 
what they are referring to as the "L" representing the "lesser known" 
orbital angular momentum (OAM) associated with the helicoidal phase 
profile of an EM field/wave.  Looks like they may be on to something useful.
