I have not installed the serial driver for the Arduino Uno yet.

The FTDI serial drivers were very nice and well-supported; word around
the campfire is that the Uno drivers are even better.

Andre raises the most important point though - the big thing that the
Arduino has going for it is that it's even easier than a BASIC Stamp
to get running and a lot more flexible.  Unlike a lot of embedded
microprocessor dev kits, getting an Arduino up and running without
assistance is well within the capabilities of a bright 10 to 12 year old.

That's key in terms of whether a device actually gets used or just
collects dust.
