How RCA both created then lost the LCD

George Heilmeier was the director of Bellcore while I was there.

He was fundamentally a good guy - but why he took a job trying to
drive the Klown Kar filled with a Board composed of the Chief Clowns
from the 7 RBOCs is beyond me. They couldn't agree on whether
it was daytime or nighttime - much less the day of the week.

The RBOCs demanded Bellcore's creation as part of the deconstruction
of Ma Bell, but yet they all hated it from the very same instant
because they had to fund it. To make matters worse, they were
beholden to it because all the OSS software for the RBOCs came
out of Bellcore. They couldn't kill Bellcore because all their entire
revenue stream flowed through that software.

The crap that Heilmeier put up with from the RBOC CEOs before
finally telling them to "get stuffed" was just mythic. My boss,
Stu Feldman, had to brief on projects with some frequency
and his candid reports were the stuff of pre-school tantrums.
