Ah yes, a clear demonstration of Sattinger's Law:

It works better when it's plugged in - right!

Today I bought a used PCMCIA serial card at my favorite computer junk store. It came with a driver cd. I stuck it in the laptop, installed the drivers and nothing happened, the card wouldn't start. I downloaded new drivers and fussed and cussed. I stuck another pcmcia card in and it worked right off. I re and re re installed the software. I pulled the card out and was about to have a fit and toss it when it occurred to me, like why would they put the fancy part of the card on the bottom? Also why was the card so hard to get out and in? You guessed it, I was putting it in upside down! duh.

It didn't take long to get it working after I figured this out. It really does key the HF rig better than the serial USB dongle. I'm happy now.
