Video of the electronic shops in Hua Qiang Bei, Shenzhen, China

Akihabara is still there in Japan.
Shenzhen is next door to Hong Kong.

Shenzhen is orders of magnitude bigger than Akihabara.
Much of the entire city is electronics manufacturing
and the area visited in the video are the suppliers
(or their storefronts). The ODM business (Original
Design & Manufacturing) is gigantic - you can get
circuit boards turned in a small number of hours
for multi-layer plated-through silk-screened and
solder-masked if you just show up with the files.
a few hours more and they can stuff and reflow
with surface-mount parts. of course the response
time measured in hours is not cheap, but with
that kind of infrastructure, designs can be turned
several times in a week. if you will wait a bit longer
(a day or two for a turn), it's quite competitive.

The day job has offices in Beijing and Shanghai
but they see a lot of Shenzhen as well.
