The limit is 50 Volts, which is one of the many reasons so much stuff  
runs on 48 Volts.  Of course, the fact that you can put four 12 Volt  
lead-acid batteries in series for 48 Volts is another reason.

Expect to see 48 Volt (or maybe 36 Volt) electrical systems in  
vehicles in the future.

As far as using the Arduino for things interfaced to home power, it  
really is not an issue.  One thing that makes sense is controlling a  
heat pump.  Well, the control circuits on heat pumps are 24 Volts.   
Not an issue.
