I've often asked the same question, Mike.

Use RCA / Cinch / Phono connectors instead. Just as resilient, earthed, a fraction of the price and, best of all, in an emergency, a matchstick or toothpick will make a reliable connection with a bare wire, just like bananas. It's crazy.
