Does anyone have one of these in their basement or junk box? It seems
like they ought to be able to find one of these for under $6000. I
didn't find any on eBay, so maybe they are very rare.

Paul -- N4PD

Dear Paul

The Chatham Marconi Maritime Center is abuzz about a new and
long sought-after artifact for our museum. For over a decade, we have
been in search of a Creed Morse code transmitter to read the punch tape
made by our Kleinschmidt machine. We finally located one of these
artifacts, which would complete our museum's Kleinschmidt exhibit, in
the State of Georgia. We are looking for donations to help defray the
full costs of approximately $6,000 to purchase and ship the new
artifact, as well as to build the exhibit to showcase its history and
use. So, we are asking you to please consider helping our efforts by
giving a small donation.

We hope to purchase the machine and complete the exhibit by
April 2016 for our Special Museum Opening events honoring the 95th
Anniversary of WCC's Inauguration of Service in Chatham and the
Celebration of Guglielmo Marconi's 142nd Birthday.

To make a donation, you may call 508-945-8889, or print this form and
mail it in to:

*What is a Creed Machine?*
When Morse code filled the airwaves and connected ships at sea with WCC,
the skilled operators at Chatham Radio diligently "pounded the brass,"
working their keys by hand as they sent and received hundreds of
individual messages every day.
While this public correspondence constituted the main business activity,
the station also offered other services, including news broadcasts and
other notices transmitted to mariners. This one-way traffic and the
24-hour station identification utilized special equipment that sent the
Morse dots and dashes automatically.
In the mid-twentieth century, the state of the art in automation was
Wheatstone tape, a narrow ribbon of heavy paper, perforated with
patterns of holes corresponding to patterns of code.
For a broadcast, a clerk prepared the tape using a typewriter-like
keyboard which triggered an electrically-actuated punch. The resulting
tape was then transmitted using a motorized tape reader. A fascinating
arrangement of pins and linkages sensed the hole patterns and actuated a
set of electrical contacts to key the powerful WCC transmitters.
The keyboard/punch was commonly known as a Kleinschmidt, or Klein for
short, after its inventor, Edward Kleinschmidt. The Marconi/RCA Wireless
Museum has featured a Klein as part of the Station exhibit since it opened.
Missing, however, is the all-important tape reader, which is only seen
in the photograph above the Klein in the exhibit. Regrettably, much
historic equipment was removed from the station before the museum took
charge.
Now, in 2016, the museum is poised to remedy the situation, at least in
part, with the purchase of a rare, working Wheatstone tape reader of the
type used at WCC, manufactured by [Frederick] Creed & Co. of England.
Like the Klein, around the station it was simply called "the Creed."
This season, the Creed would fill the lingering gap and add an element
of animation to an expanded Station exhibit.

*A Note from Lewis Masson *
Lewis Masson has been a volunteer at CMMC from its start, and worked in
the WCC station for 35 years. When he isn't in the museum writing
telegrams for visitors, Lewis has been following every lead to track
down a Creed and return it to the museum.
"The Creed was a very important piece of radio equipment that was used
at WCC Chatham Radio every single day. The minute you came in the door,
you could hear the Creed sending Morse code, sending out the identifying
signal for Chatham Radio. The ships could hear the Creed going 24 hours
a day, and this helped ships identify which frequency Chatham Radio was
on. When the radio operator finished sending a message, the Creed would
come on and keep going, identifying 'WCC, WCC' all day long, which is
why it was such an important tool."
