I remember from those few occasions that I had to buy batteries in Switzerland (I usually brought my own) that they were

a different type (though sometimes the same brand) as those I got over here. We have a number of things that we are

expected to haul to the dump rather than simply put in the trash can -- fluorescent bulbs and electronics for example --

but so far AA cells have not made the list. That I know of.
