All,

I received the following from the HacDC radio club. It concerns a special event being

sponsored by an Italian radio club to commemorate the Enigma cryptographic machine

used by the Germans during World War II. To quote from the message below:

> > > > > > > As a first experience, it is sufficient that even only a few members are available to do radio activities (compatible with their commitments ... no 24-hour activity is required) in the period from 22 to 29 September, using your Club callsign.
> > > > Practically, all modes are allowed (CW - SSB - Digi - etc.)and therefore every member can work as best they are congenial, even from their home shack.

> > > > >

The operation involves sending traffic that has been encrypted either using one of the

original Enigma machines (rare) or a software emulator which can be found via the

Italian club's web site. The question of the legality of sending encrypted traffic via ham

radio occurred to me too. I therefore ran it through the ARRL's general counsel,

Chris Imlay, N3KD, who pointed out that what is prohibited by Part 97 is encryption

with the intent of hiding the traffic's content. Under the current circumstances, the

Enigma algorithms are well known and the key settings (decryption key) will be

publicized and used by everyone participating. So, no legal problems per Chris. I will

be happy to send a copy of Chris' email to anybody who is interested in participating.

We have been invited to participate. The question is whether there are members to

wish to do so. If so, they need to identify by sending a note to bod at amrad.org mailto:bod at amrad.org .

Operation will involve the use of the club's call, which can only be used at one location

at a time. So, operating by various operators has to be coordinated to ensure there are

no simultaneous operations by two or more stations.

If you would like to join the party, please notify bod at amrad.org, mailto:bod at amrad.org, giving your preferred

operating times and we'll set up some means of getting everybody in sync.

Cristiano,

Hello to you. I am Jeff Dahn - KB3ZUK, the President of the HacDC ARC. Thank you again for your invitation to participate in this very unique and interesting opportunity. Unfortunately for me, I suffer with chronic illnesses that caused me to have a poor turn in my state of health as of late. I will not be able to participate in normal club activities for the next few weeks at least due to being restricted to home health care for all but a narrow list of exceptions.

As such, Don Jones, K6ZO, will be running things for the club in the interim. His email is:

westsideparkfellowship at gmail.com

I am forwarding a copy of this information to him so he may discuss it with the membership in the next couple of meetings.

Don: please stress that people can operate from their home making use of the club sign and that no museum involvement is required. Just some simple coordination would be necessary between our members to ensure that multiple operators would not be on the air at the same time using the club's call sign from different locations. Also, proper logging and documentation would be essential for any requested QSL follow-ups.

Many thanks again for the invitation to participate in the initiative. I wish everyone much success.

Very 73 de Jeff Dahn / KB3ZUK

I am forwarding this to the HacDC club list and our club president, Jeff Dahn, to see if anyone else is interested in taking it up. I will also send it to a couple of other local radio clubs, including PVRC, Pentagon, and AMRAD, and Nuclear Ship Savannah and encourage them to contact you directly if they would like to participate.
