In the first major gifts of 2024, and as part of SFI’s 40th Anniversary,
the McKinnon Family Foundation and the Darla Moore Foundation have
collectively pledged $750K each year for the next five years to support
SFI’s education and early-career researcher programs. The gifts will
ensure the financial stability of SFI’s Omidyar Fellowship, summer
Undergraduate Complexity Research program, and flagship Complex Systems
Summer School.

Life as a planetary regulator: an experimental test

In a new paper, SFI External Professor Ricard Solé and co-authors
propose an experimental setup that will test James Lovelock and Lynn
Margulis's hypothesis of planetary self-regulation.

Networks can represent changing systems, like the spread of an epidemic
or the growth of groups in a population of people. But the structure of
these networks can change, too, as links appear or vanish over time. In
a new paper, a trio of SFI-affiliated researchers describe a novel way
to aggregate static snapshots into smaller clusters of networks while
still preserving the dynamic nature of the system.

In 2015, the United Nations published its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development, but we're falling woefully short of those targets. Of
particular concern to a pair of SFI External Professors are the
biodiversity goals. In a February working group, researchers explored
the probabilities and consequences of falling short of the U.N. goals.

Examples of successful governance of common-pool resources — like
community forests and fisheries — exist, but the circumstances and
mechanisms are often unclear or forgotten. A new simulation model
published in /Nature Sustainability /shows that the evolution of
sustainable institutions critically depends on clearly defined and
enforced access rights.

How a city is organized can create less-biased citizens

A new study in /Nature Communications/ presents data and a mathematical
model to explain why there is more unconscious racial bias in some
cities than others, suggesting that a city's level of implicit bias
depends on how populous, diverse, and segregated that city is.

Study: Plant groupings in drylands support ecosystem resilience

Many complex systems, from microbial communities to mussel beds to
drylands, display striking self-organized clusters. According to
theoretical models, these groupings play an important role in how an
ecosystem works and its ability to respond to environmental changes. A
new paper in /PNAS/ focuses on the spatial patterns found in drylands
and offers important empirical evidence validating the models.

“It no longer makes sense to speak of free speech in traditional
terms,” write SFI External Professor Allison Stanger and co-author Jaron
Lanier in an op-ed for /Wired/

“The internet has so transformed the nature of the speaker that the
definition of speech itself has changed.” The authors explore the
history and ramifications of Section 230, the 26-word “liability shield
that enshrined the ad-driven internet,” and consider the possible
benefits should Congress decide to axe it altogether.

parts of the universe? Join us for insights from SFI External Professors
Ricard Solé and Sara Walker on the signature characteristics of life and
the debate around assembly theory.

If everything is bound to fundamental rules with some exceptions, why is
life so diverse? We talk to SFI External Professors Brian Enquist and
Pablo Marquet about the wonders of ecology and evolution, where
biodiversity comes from, if forecasts can be made about the biosphere
just like we do for weather, and what happens when biodiversity is
threatened.
