I'm going through the dunked ESC's and
motors. I put together a fixture to make it easy to swap
the devices in and out. I thought the motors would be
indestructible, but only one has worked, two stuttered and one did
nothing. Two of the ESC's I tested smoked up the room, one even
made a brilliant white light from one of the mosfets. I marked them
bad and am considering trying to replace the melted mosfets. One
was OK and one I will test tomorrow. Also it took a couple of days
but I have managed to get both over discharged Lipo's to take a
charge of sorts. The bad motors I'll disassemble and maybe rewind
for a brushless gimbal. I'll have to try and read the numbers on
the mosfets and see what they cost. Boy am I having fun!
Apparently the flight computer and RC
receiver survived the dunking in Bay water, I'll test the ESC's
later. Motors look good, frame is OK. Camera is a loss, oh
well...
I tried for a high altitude movie
with my wooden Quad. I took off and ran at high throttle.
It went up pretty quick. I stopped climbing when the drone
was a little dot in the evening sky, maybe 300~400 feet. It
drifted over a Cove (near Saint Michaels, MD) as there was a
light breeze. I reduced throttle a good bit and tilted the
drone towards me (and land). It was coming down at an angle
and all looked good. I leveled out and was giving it some
power to start to slow and flare out for a soft landing when
it just dropped from the
sky from about 50 feet up. It hit the water with a loud
smacking sound. The Styrofoam end pieces shot off it,
which is what they were supposed to do to break a fall.
I launched a nearby canoe to go get it, but in my
excitement lost it and it floated off. I ran around the
little harbor to get the aluminum row boat in front of my
cabin, rowed over and got the canoe, tied a rope to it and
then towed it behind the boat so I could pick up the drone
remains. The picture is the drone sitting on the rear
thwart (seat) of the row boat, just as I found it. That's
sea weed.

I disassembled the drone, took off all the electronics and
rinsed them in fresh water, but haven't tested them yet.
I measured the battery voltage when I got to shore, it was
way below minimum so I guess I fried another battery. I
think the ESC's (Electronic Speed Controllers) did a low
voltage cut off causing the machine to just fall from the
sky. The camera is ruined and so far I haven't been able
to recover the video off the SD card.
