I know some folks who were in the Virginia delegation to
the Democratic convention in Philly. I asked as to what
communications techniques where used on the floor. I was
surprised to hear that it was done almost exclusively with
texting. The DNC whips who handed out signs used text.
The people I know who are Sanders delegates used text to
coordinate within the Virginia delegation as well as
receive texts from the Sanders campaign. There was
little lag time in the messages.
People were using their own phones, so you can assume they
used different carriers. Obviously there was a cell
access point at the hall, probably a couple. I wonder if
the different carriers formed a pool or did each have a
separate tower? I'd like to get some stats on how many
texts were passed at the event, but have no idea were to
look.
