</head><body><p style="font-size:14pt;font-family:times new roman,times;color:#000000;" class="default-style">Some years ago, AMRAD took a trip down to Green Bank, West Virginia, the site of the</p><p style="font-size:14pt;font-family:times new roman,times;color:#000000;" class="default-style">Green Bark Observatory. Those who were there will remember, and those who have a copy </p><p style="font-size:14pt;font-family:times new roman,times;color:#000000;" class="default-style">of the AMRAD Newsletter from that time will be able to read about it. It was the home of</p><p style="font-size:14pt;font-family:times new roman,times;color:#000000;" class="default-style">a number of telescopes, including a copy of the Karl Jansky model built, IIRC, in his back</p><p style="font-size:14pt;font-family:times new roman,times;color:#000000;" class="default-style">yard. Its main attraction was the largest radio telescope in the campus, a monster that rode</p><p style="font-size:14pt;font-family:times new roman,times;color:#000000;" class="default-style">on steel tracks while maneuvering to the proper coordinates in the sky. It construction was</p><p style="font-size:14pt;font-family:times new roman,times;color:#000000;" class="default-style">helped by the then-Senator Robert C. Byrd, who promoted funding for the thing. Its</p><p style="font-size:14pt;font-family:times new roman,times;color:#000000;" class="default-style">predecessor collapsed on top of the concrete building in which the experimenter was</p><p style="font-size:14pt;font-family:times new roman,times;color:#000000;" class="default-style">stationed.
