A while back we were talking about the risks inherent in using the power lines
for data transmission, as an alternative to dial-up service and at higher
data rates.
Yesterday's edition of Telecommunications Reports Daily notes that a joint
venture (called NOR.WEB) was formed some time back between United Utilities
plc (UK) and Northern Telecom Ltd. (Canada) to provide power line data
transmission service in Europe at rates over 1 Mbps, and that Nortel has
confirmed that the project has been scrapped. No additional details were
provided.
