Message-ID:

Speaker:	Mr. Matt Giltner, UUNet
Title:	The Networks Behind the Internet
Date:	Monday, Apr. 30, 2001, 6:00 p.m.

Location:	WorldCom/UUNet Campus main building, Ashburn, VA

Abstract:	The Internet has grown exponentially in the 1980's and
1990's. Even with the current correction in Internet businesses, the
Internet continues to grow at a 2.5x multiple per year. Major Internet
Service Providers (ISPs) have built and re-built their national backbone
networks in order to support the rapidly increasing traffic loads and
demand for reliable IP service. This presentation reviews the history and
status of the largest Internet backbones and reviews the short term and
long term technology changes such as Multi-Protocol Label Switching
(MPLS), dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems, and
Generalized MPLS that will allow continued expansion of Internet services.
Speaker Bio:	Mr. James M. (Matt) Giltner is a manager of Network Planning
at UUNET, a WorldCom company. His duties involve planning the
deployment of UUNET's national IP backbone to include the addition of
network nodes, scalability of existing nodes, and technology insertion int=
o the
operational network. Prior to UUNET, Mr. Giltner was a senior engineer at
TRW supporting DARPA advanced network research projects and Dept of
Defense satellite and ground-based communication system projects. Mr
Giltner has Bachelors and Masters degrees in Aerospace Engineering from
Texas A&M University and the University of Texas, respectively. Mr. Giltn=
er
also received a Masters Degree in Telecommunications and computers
from George Washington University in 1998. He is a registered
Professional Engineer (Texas) and a member of IEEE. Mr. Giltner helped to
