On page 58 of the January 2002 issue of CQ Magazine, there is a new product announcement on the Alinco DJ-596 Dual-Band HT. What's unusual about it is an optional EJ-43U digital board to permit digital voice communications with similarly equipped units. It says it uses "ITU-TV.32 protocol." 

ITU-T Recommendation V.32 is "A family of 2-wire, duplex modems operating at data signalling rates of up to 9600 bit/s for use on the general switched telephone network and on leased telephone-type circuits," of which I have a copy.

I went to

and found a description of the main features of the HT. Additionally, page 4 of their FAQ

describes the digital mode somewhat.

Does anyone have any more information?
