On Thursday, January 9, our guest speaker will be Ron Payne, WA6YOU. Ron is an
avid experimenter with digital modes for ham radio. Ron will give us an update
on what's available and his experiences with the various software programs
that allow digital transmission over existing equipment.

Some have noticed the report of the first transatlantic amateur radio digital
voice contact between the USA and France, as reported on the ARRL Web. 

There's a background article in the Jan/Feb 2003 issue of QEX, entitled
"International Digital Audio Broadcasting Standards: Voice Coding and Amateur
Radio Applications," based on the Digital Radio Mondiale system but scrunched
into 3 kHz.

RadCom for December 2002 on page 11 carries an announcement of the DRM
software radio project. The article says that it uses an "extra down-converter
board to existing receivers and thenusing software to decode the signal via a
PC sound card." Check www.DRMrx.org.

In the January 2003 issue of CQ Magazine, there's an article on "Digital
Haming: A Need for Standards," which says, in effect, "Why doesn't someone do
something?"
