I'd also suggest beginning with a small pilot hole, and using
increasingly larger bits until you're at the interference fit that you
want.
You didn't mention from what gauge wire those elements were made. If
they're at all thick, trying to drill first with a fat bit will be
difficult. Pilot holes will help guide the larger bit into the right
place when it gets to the other (pilot-drilled) wall of the pipe.
