Microsoft Visual development Express edition - anyone?

While researching software to update myself from the 1990s, I found that
Microsoft has a FREE version of several of their products, called express
editions.  They have Visual Basic, C++, C sharp, Java, Web Development,
along with support software.

Has anybody tried this free software, and how was it?  I'm trying to load it
up, and having issues with the MFC development library, but only playing
with it for a couple of hours.
