There is a nice short article on the history of radio in the June  
issue of Discover Magazine.

"... broadcasting was actually started kick-started by amateurs: "By  
the 19-teens, ham radio operators where
sending homework and football scores and news in Morse code, and then  
they went to World War I and found
out about vacuum tubes."  Thanks to the amplifying power of the newly  
invented vacuum tunes, hams started
sending audio everywhere.  "You could just set up a transmitter and  
start broadcasting stuff,"....

There's a picture of Howard Armstrong's tower  and another  of an  
antique TV      Its aim is the general interest reader.
