Regulator ComReg Grants Spectrum to Irish Amateur Radio Operators
Irish telecom regulator ComReg has granted the Irish Radio Transmitters
Society (IRTS) new access to spectrum for amateur radio broadcasts. Following a
successful meeting in the summer and ongoing exchange of information, four 3-kHz
channels at 5 MHz are being granted. These are centered on 5280, 5290, 5400,
and 5405 kHz. These will be available for an initial period of one year, and
individual applications are required. Allowable power will be 23 dBW to an
antenna with not more than 0-dB gain (e.g., a dipole). Some or all of these
channels are also in use in the United Kingdom, Iceland, Finland, Norway, Canada,
and the United States. Some administrative details remain to be ironed out, but
it is anticipated that the first variations of licenses could be issued by the
end of this month or early December. Permission for a 5-MHz beacon has been
granted, and a call sign and frequency are awaited. Learn additional details at
the IRTS website.
