Regulator ComReg Grants Spectrum to Irish Amateur Radio Operators
 Irish telecom regulator ComReg has granted the Irish Radio Transmitters 
Society (IRTS) new access to spectrum for amateur radio broadcasts. Following a 
successful meeting in the summer and ongoing exchange of information, four 3-kHz 
channels at 5 MHz are being granted. These are centered on 5280, 5290, 5400, 
and 5405 kHz. These will be available for an initial period of one year, and 
individual applications are required. Allowable power will be 23 dBW to an 
antenna with not more than 0-dB gain (e.g., a dipole). Some or all of these 
channels are also in use in the United Kingdom, Iceland, Finland, Norway, Canada, 
and the United States. Some administrative details remain to be ironed out, but 
it is anticipated that the first variations of licenses could be issued by the 
end of this month or early December. Permission for a 5-MHz beacon has been 
granted, and a call sign and frequency are awaited. Learn additional details at
