as the canal extended from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh
this was a method to get the boats over the Allegany mountains
in central Pa. They would roll them on to fixtures and raise them 
... now the boats were smaller and the power was horses but it worked
till the railroads
took over and replaced the whole mess
