Marketplace of Ideas: Is Cyberspace Making You Sick?
A growing number of people are using the Internet to diagnose their
illnesses, real or imagined, according to a report on CNN.com. Users type
in medical symptoms on Web sites like WebMD and get a list of possible
illnesses in return. While some see such online resources as helpful,
many doctors say that medical information without expert analysis can
turn people into "cyberchondriacs" who become anxious or believe they're
sick based on what they read online.
Can self-diagnosing based on online sources do more harm than good?
