Hello Gang,
I got a zippy do da reply to my email from WMALs Chief Engineer
in my inbox and thought I would share.
It's not often I talk with them you know.
here is David Sproul from WMAL explaining why AM 630
is on 161.700 Mhz.....
"Ah, not to worry, Bob. I had our licensed KUR-811 RPU transmitter up for most of the day. I'd always wondered if ANYBODY else noticed when we were up on that frequency.
In years past we brought remote broadcasts into the studios on that frequency. Later, just airborne traffic reports were delivered that way. Now it is only a backup link to the Bethesda transmitter site from our Friendship Heights studios.
We experienced an unpleasant incident a week or two ago. Many of our crucial Verizon lines went out at the same time, including both circuits carrying our programs out to Bethesda. We were caught a little flat footed and would like to have some other options.
Today I was just making some adjustments so that we can rely on the 161.7 link in case the same thing happens in the future. Verizon has not yet explained what happened. Whatever it was, that kind of thing is exceedingly rare."
