It's the Lightsquared disaster.

You can write off having GPS work anywhere they offer service.
the preliminary tests are *very* scary. Aircraft within 25 miles
are rendered deaf to GPS, and all the precision kinematics that
GPS is used for will be screwed. Most interesting will be when
they discover that screwing GPS will wreck the cellular network
by destroying the precision timing used throughout the country
in the telephony network. and until recently, they relied on Loran-C
as a backup for precision timing when GPS failed.  But the unspeakable
dickheads destroyed that first. the modern telecommunications
infrastructure was just given a giant "off" switch. Good thing
we don't have enemies who do crap like this when we have
gubmint cretins doing things like this.

it's enough to make one believe in conspiracy theories.
