Perhaps what you are seeing is the metal spring that is a permanent
feature of the spring/housing assembly.
There are also contacts available in a variety of size to suit various
wire sizes and current ratings.
There exists an Anderson part number 111038G2 contact
insertion/extraction tool, but I have never seen or used one.
If there is a contact in the housing, you can tell by looking
in the back (square opening) end.
