Volunteer Opportunities To Help In The Fight Against Malware?

There are some things that help even if you're using the resources to help yourself or out of curiosity.
Virustotal is a site that takes submissions of suspicious files, runs them against about 40 of the most popular anti-virus tools, and then sends you a report of what was detected. If it finds something new, they send samples to the AV companies for analysis to improve the products.

As you mentioned, the Honeynet project is a collaborative effort to set up a network of honeypot systems to detect and analyse new attack methods and malware.

One very large research project is WOMBAT. This is a multi-pronged automated analysis system with modules that do a variety of different analyses, contributing to a shared corpus and data feed of attack/malware information. The "price" of gaining access to the data feed is setting up a node.

Some of this work is conducted by larger research labs, but there are more than a few independent researchers participating in all of them.
