Lightning not in a bottle but heard by a chip

I am running a Boltek lightning detector hooked up to send strike info 
to the Weatherunderground network.

the sensor is a small multiloop antenna with a pci card receiver. 
Apparently they read the spectrum of the lightning strikes at multiple 
points over frequency to estimate range then use the multiloop antenna 
go get bearing. This is then time tagged with a local GPS and sent off 
to the StrikeStar network for triangulation.
