there are several lightning detector companies
that build units for protecting golf courses,
parks, and sports facilities which use this
same technique. if you go googling, you can
find some good pictures of the sensor and the
instruction manual goes into some detail about
the importance of keeping the sensor clean
(leakage, obviously).  we looked at getting one
for the farm but they think a lot of them.
