Some more fun things are underway at google maps it seems...

"Michael Jones, Chief Technology Advocate at Google, makes a
presentation to the 2012 Joint Warfighting Conference."

It's the final part of a conference held last month:

"if Google can do it, then eventually anyone could do it, being quiet
about it won$,1ry(Bt prevent this from happening."

Of course, it's not just Google, either:

Some of our friends have microsats, but one can DIY
overhead imagery and make maps like these people:

Grassroots Mapping Toolkit:

(without having to use Helium):

For field day, think about how cool it would be to have
much more precise and machine parsable location specification
in ham radio logging software, and how interesting it
would be to see a google-earth type of visualization of
the times and paths of field day contacts.
