Tacoistas,

A lot of the discussion at the table today concerned railroad locomotives.
In case there is a wider interest in this topic I invite all AMRAD members
to the next meeting of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers
- Vehicular Technology Society in downtown DC on September 11. Attendance
is free and membership in the IEEE is not necessary. A buffet meal is
available for $15. Sorry, you cannot bring in your own food. Please e-mail
your reservations by September 7 to vts.ltc.dc at gmail.com and indicate if you
want a meal or not.

ABOUT THE TOPIC:

In the face of increasingly volatile fuel markets, tightening environmental
regulations and the need to provide faster, non-electrified intercity
passenger rail service, the U.S. railway industry needs an
alternatively-fueled, high-horsepower, non-electric locomotive that is
reliable, cheap to fuel, low maintenance and easy to use. The
not-for-profit Coalition for Sustainable Rail (CSR) is confident that the
melding of easy-to-produce solid biofuel and modern steam technology can
produce such a locomotive. Keep in mind, however, that this isn't your
Grandparents' steam locomotive!

In collaboration with the University of Minnesota, CSR will create the
world's first carbon-neutral, higher speed locomotive. This presentation
will describe the steam locomotive's demise 60 years ago, a discussion of
the vast mechanical engineering improvements over these 60 years, and what
CSR plans to do with its 1937-built, 105-foot-long steam locomotive. For
background on the project, please visit <http://www.csrail.org>

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

*	Davidson A. Ward | President

An alumnus of the University of Minnesota, Davidson Ward brings experience
in marketing, business development, design, railroading and steam locomotion
to CSR. Having worked extensively with faculty at the U of M to develop the
partnership that created CSR, Ward continues to facilitate close interaction
among all partners in the coalition to ensure efficient research and
development. His railroad writing and photography have been featured in
Trains Magazine and he is a member of the Transportation Research Board AR
020 committee on Passenger Rail Equipment Integration and its subcommittee,
Sustainable Railroad Technologies.
*	John T. Rhodes | Vice President and Treasurer

A railroad operations, simulation and equipment consultant in the
Washington, D.C. area, John Rhodes has investigated the practical
application of modern steam locomotives since his college days. He earned
his Master's degree in Transportation Policy, Operations, and Logistics at
George Mason University, having written a master's thesis on modern steam
locomotive engineering. Rhodes has been published on the topic of modern
steam in the Stephenson Locomotive Society Journal, the publication of this
premier society for the study of railways and railway locomotion in the UK,
founded 1909.
