the best part, aside from the fundamental genius of the observations,
is that you just *know* many, many cubic meters of hot air were bloviated
at the times over just those sterling examples of "konventional wizdum"
grasping at invented straws.  it really does lend some badly-needed 
perspective.

and indeed, xkcd.com is on *my* list of mandatory reading.
