A year or so ago, I purchased an X-Tronic 4040 from the vendor, I think via ebay. It was under $120 and has both a good soldering iron and a hot-air wand. The thing came with ten extra tips and nozzles, plus a spare heating element for both iron and wand. This is a sample of what I got, I believe from the same vendor:

It has worked pretty good. I know others, such as George, N2APB, of Midnight Designs and NJQRP also uses the same one. I’m happy with both the iron and wand. The only issue is that the temperature readouts are in centigrade. Recommended by Foxlabs (me). Save up and get this one versus the cheaper models. You will LOVE the hot-air wand. Don’t use it on your hair, though.

That is a very good Youtube site. In one of his videos he shows a selection of soldering tips. I need to improve my soldering capability. What is the best soldering iron for the buck?

The youtube is an EEVblog showing how to use the schmartboard
break-out platforms for a 0.4mm pitch part. they make more stuff
which is possibly useful for those doing Tiny Stuff.
