wifi repeaters or range extenders

I've set up and used a few WiFi repeaters over the years. I have one set 
up permanently at my house and one at my brothers house. I've also used 
them short term to get around coverage/connectivity issues. They 
generally work fine, security is variable (depending on what you are 
trying to do). They do have some annoying quirks.

Mostly I use old Linksys WRT54GLs that I have lying around and a Linksys 
E3000. I wouldn't buy a WRT54GL today. I re-flashed them with DD-WRT, 
which I find more reliable and easier to configure:

To extend the range between the repeater and the access point, I 
sometimes use a Cantenna that I built. I think I used these plans, or 
something very similar:

At my brothers place I set up a Ubiquiti Bullet, which is mounted 
outdoors and uses Power Over Ethernet. That's worked very well for a few 
years now:
