FW: A better USB plug ?

Phil,

As you know, when Americans travel in Europe they need to run by Radio Shack
or Best Buy to pick up a set of power plug adaptors prior to going there. I
assume this new USB specification will lead to various other specifications
and will create a new industry to manufacture a complete set of adapters
that will cover the complete range of specifications. This will make the
software guys (like Willy) happy since they can now generate and sell new
software that will provide translations between the specifications and
trouble shoot problems with the new. Even the Hackers will be happy
,
something new for them to screw around with.

Remember, American industry used to build (and probably still do) products
that didn’t last too long because of defects in manufacturing. If you
wanted to have a good car you either bought one made in Japan or paid a lot
of money to keep the one you have running. The computer and software
industry doesn’t have to worry about this because what you buy today is out
of date tomorrow morning. I get the feeling that the younger generation is
definitely a keep up with the Joneses and possibly a don’t let the Joneses
pass you by generation when it comes to cell phones, computers, X Boxes,
Wiis and the many other items available today.

In the European Union, there are 47 different types of approved mains
electricity connectors, and an EU commission designing a 48th (so that its
eventual adoption will not benefit any one country or region).

I can see that the USB guys are out to beat that.
