Hedy Lamarr. She did not have an engineering degree, but was very smart and was married to an Austrian armaments manufacturer, who had discussed with her how torpedoes worked and the problem of jamming radio control signals. She developed and patented the idea with avant-garde composer George Antheil, but the US Navy refused to use the idea until the Cuba crisis, by which time the patent had expired. She died aged 85 in 2000, having spent the last years of her life suing people for misrepresentation of her life story and image. And what an image.
