  And I'm old enough to remember using a wood cased hand crank phone at 
my Grandfather's farm. It was a party line and folks would sometimes 
listen in.
Later, after moving to a small town, one simply lifted the handset and 
asked an operator to connect us to a three digit number.
One day my much younger brother told an operator he wanted to speak to 
his grandmother. She connected him. Oh, the good old days. ;-)
