Last Saturday I stumbled across a miracle. On my way to lunch at Tippy's in
Merrifield I normally tune the mobile rig to the AMRAD repeater and give a
call to see if anyone is listening. Before Sandy left for the better land
of Texas (I know, who can prove Texas is better than Northern VA) I just
might have him come back to me. Ian was also a person who listened to the
repeater but he is out of the country now. I have spoken a number of times
to Mike (KA2ZEV) but it has been a number of weeks since we have chatted on
the repeater. I have also spoken to Dick Barth and Bill a few times but
that was a while back when we were having out monthly meetings at the Oakton
library. Let's face it almost no one uses our repeater (members included).
Last Saturday's miracle occurred after several calls on the repeater. I
forget the call sign of the station that came back to me but do remember he
was not a member of AMRAD. He was returning from HRO in Woodbridge and was
passing through Lorton on 123 when he heard my call and responded. Since he
was traveling toward Fairfax with his ultimate destination close to
Merrifield I mentioned our Saturday event and told him he was welcome to
join us at our weekly feast upon the sacred Taco (and other goodies). About
two years ago I also chatted with another ham on the repeater and believe it
or not he was from out of town, visiting the area (Now that is a real
miracle - from out of town and listening to W4CIA's frequency . WOW!).
I guess what I am trying to say is why don't members of AMRAD who live in
the DC area start monitoring the repeater and chatting on it. It might also
be nice if we programmed it into our scanner if we have one. The lack of
activity on our repeater could result in its loss.
Well, I am now off to Tippy's. I wonder it anyone will respond when I give
a call on the repeater during my journey this morning.
