The IBM 1401

Figure 1 is a nice reminder that in those days, every complete data processing system came with a pleasant and capable brunette as a major component. Often, as the data processing system rapidly lost functionality with the passing years, the brunette became more functional and ended up as the major asset to the organization. They didn't necessarily become more pleasant, but more than made up for this with increased capability, ruthless efficiency and a healthy resistance to the stupidity of senior management. I have known and admired several, and even managed to marry one.
