The NLJD looks like a metal detector but consists of two 915 MHz
transmitters Frequency A and Frequency B, and a receiver that responds
to an Inter-Modulation product frequency C. Example A= 915 MHz, B = 914
MHz, 2A-B=C, C = 916 MHz .

In the scene, she is crying, sitting in the FBI Office toilet ripping
the receiver apart and you are led to think she intends to flush it (too
big) she then soaks the circuit board in the sink and wraps it with a
wet towel, puts it in her purse. Later when the office is swept by a
TCSM tech, the detector hears barely a crackle going over her purse and
he dismisses it.

During that era, the electronics on the desk were at most a computer
terminal, an analog 500 WE telephone and a calculator. No
cellphones.iPods, Key Fobs RFID tags, LED lamps etc, to sort through.

Great series with a lot of tech stuff. One episode had the spies getting
access to the trunk of an FBI car to get a copy of the encryption key
from a trunk mounted green KY series like encryption device. The key was
a punch card from which a wax impression was made. This device may or
may not have been accurate in the Reagen era.
