Tiny stuff

I almost never use the patented SMD launching tool (a.k.a. tweezers). I just carefully place the part on the board using my finger nails. I also hold SMD parts in place while soldering with a finger nail. That’s why I tend to have longer nails than the average male. With very small pressure, I rarely launch anything. Once I get one solder joint in place, all becomes easier. Do your work inside a large (two gallon?) zip bag if possible to reduce chances of a successful launch. AND DON’T BREATH IN WHILE SOLDERING, OTHERWISE YOU CAN GET EXTRA MINERALS IN YOUR DIET.

I do use a combination of solder braid and a good solder sucker to clean up boards before resoldering parts. I also have a combo iron and hot air rework station, but it rarely sees action. I’m too lazy and old-school to actually use it except for the most small IC packages.

Your biggest problem is obvious. Don’t use coffee. Only use Pepsi, or maybe RC Cola. Coke (either type) is proven to be defective in this application. Your into radio control stuff, right? Royal Crown (RC) Cola is the magic elixir recommended for you. You can also use the goo inside a moon pie for project insulation.

One of the little auto mechanic magnets-on-a-stick might help find wayward parts. Probably not the correct parts, but nevertheless....

Which Galaxy is S4 anyway? That’s probably too far away from the Milky Way to be found, even with a rare-earth magnet doohickie. You never know, however, as those rarely work properly here on Earth in finding part of immediate interest, a corollary of a corollary to Murphy’s Law.

I just unsuccessfully tried to solder a new on/off switch to a Samsung Galaxy S4 main board. The person who gave it to me had globed on some solder, which I was able to get off with braid. I think the tiny tabs on the switch fit in through holes on the board, but the holes are solder filled making it hard to place the switch. I think if I can position it, then I can solder it. Ah well, I managed to lose 2 of the switches of the strip trying to figure out how to clamp it, I got one left. I will wait till morning and a fresh pot of coffee to try again...
